WHAT ARE THE PENALTIES FOR LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT?

A couple of weeks ago, an individual who was ultimately charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage called me. He had bumped another car while in a parking lot and did not think there had been any damage to his vehicle or the other vehicle. Unfortunately, there was damage to the other vehicle, and an officer appeared at his house to give him a citation for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. Although this is an infraction – and not a crime – it is punished by up to 15 days in jail and a $250 fine. If you find yourself in this situation, it is very possible that an attorney can work with the prosecutor to get your charge reduced to a lower violation and avoid your having to spend time in jail or pay the fine.
